Baby To Toddler To Kid Nurcery

Six Simple Tricks to Decorating a Nursery that Grows With Your Child

New life brings such excitement and joy — so much, in fact, that you can barely contain yourself when it comes to decorating the nursery. Before you rush into decorating, it’s important to keep something in mind: babies grow quickly.

Instead of thinking solely about the now, take some of the future into consideration and plan to decorate in a way that will accommodate the phases ahead. Not only will it save you a lot of work, decorating a space that will span multiple ages will save you a lot of money as well.

Let’s take a look at how you can decorate a nursery that will grow with your child.

1. Avoid pastel colors

Pastels use to be the go-to palette when it came to nurseries, but today, richer neutrals as well as fun, bold colors, are gaining popularity. Grays, whites, browns, and dark blues, such as navy, set a beautiful foundation for layering (and they’re perfect for when your baby’s gender is a surprise). Even if you do know the gender, a neutral base makes it easy to add pops of color that are more gender-specific. Additionally, a neutral scheme allows you to change those accent colors easily and more frequently, which is perfect for the ever-changing tastes of children. If you like the idea of color, opt for bright yellow, teal, pink, orange, or green. They’re fun and versatile. But don’t feel like you have to add bold colors on all four walls. Instead, consider painting a single wall as an accent.

2. Buy furniture that will transition as they do

Many manufacturers offer convertible furniture that will grow with your child. Consider purchasing a changing table that converts to a dresser or a crib that becomes a toddler bed (some even transition to a twin bed). There are some gliders that even turn into a stationary armchair once the moving parts are removed. Not only will this save you money, you’ll have furniture that works with the decor of the room for a longer period of time. This gives you flexibility until the time comes for them to help pick out furniture that will take them into the tween and teen stage.

3. Pick patterns that are tried and true

Consider choosing patterns that will last. No-fail patterns include polka dots, stripes, geometrics, paisley, and natural flora and fauna. There are so many adorable patterns available for baby nurseries, but they’re only good for a few years. Patterns like the ones mentioned above will exceed that. Patterns can be a great way to add visual interest for your little one, so be sure to use them on bedding, window treatments, and other upholstered furniture.

4. Be selective about themes

Themes can be incredibly cute but you may find yourself changing your little one’s space more often than you’d like. A child’s interests change regularly, so find ways to work around their tastes without splashing it throughout every nook and cranny.

5. Hang interesting art on the walls

There is no rule that states a baby nursery has to have babyish artwork. That sweet animal and alphabet print may be incredibly cute, but they only fit the space for a short amount of time. Because of this, if you do choose to decorate with them, consider purchasing small-scale options, rather than large ones, which often cost quite a bit more. As you adorn your little one’s walls, keep in mind that large, eye-catching prints or photographs can be just as fitting as the ones geared specifically toward babies. There are countless prints and photographs (and even wall decals) that are a bit more fitting if you want to create a room that will grow with your child. Many department stores carry them as well as a variety of online retailers. Another wonderful wall decor option is marque or large wooden letters. They can be used to create their initials on the wall or their entire first name. A painted wall mural is yet another beautiful way to create a focal point in their room. Whichever you choose, wall decor can make a statement and will be enjoyed for years.

6. Add fun accessories

It is a baby nursery, so don’t forget to incorporate some sweet and whimsical touches. Accessories such as toy baskets, stuffed animals, mobiles, and baby-centric trinkets are ideal finishing touches that can be swapped out for something different as your child grows.
