Between quarantine and social distancing, it’s been an interesting year so far, to say the least. And even though home decorating has been halted temporarily, there’s no reason we can’t dream about what we want to do to our homes when we finally get the chance, right?

With all this extra time at home, it’s likely that you’ve become a little more acquainted with your furniture. So, we figured it was the perfect time to talk about sofas, including what some popular and classic styles are as well as some trends you’ll see this year. 

Chesterfield 

The name alone has a certain air of distinction— and is it any wonder? With its symmetrical arms and back rich with deeply tufted buttons, this iconic beauty has been a favorite of many since the 18th century. While these sofas have traditionally been upholstered in leather, they can also be covered in fabric. 

Tuxedo 

Although similar to the Chesterfield with its rows of tufting, a tuxedo sofa is a bit cleaner and more angular in design. Tuxedo sofas can easily be recognized by its arms and back that are identical in height. The deep seating offers comfort, while the high arms give it a more formal feel. 

Camelback

Just as the name suggests, the camelback sofa has a hump (or two) that accents the main silhouette of its style. Made popular in the 19th century by Chippendale, this sofa appeased those who desired a style that was both aristocratic and formal— but don’t let that fool you. This style of sofa can be equally fitting for a more casual space when upholstered with a more casual fabric. Camelback sofas are easy to spot by their exposed legs, cushionless back, square or rolled arms, and of course, that hump. 

Mid-Century Modern 

Over the last several years, there’s been a surge in the popularity of mid-century modern design style. Therefore, it’s no surprise that this style of sofa is a popular choice. Known for their exposed legs and linear structure, mid-century modern sofas are incredibly versatile regardless of whether they are true vintage pieces, reproductions, or new designs that incorporate some mid-century modern elements. 

Sectional 

While not as deep-rooted in history as the other sofas listed above, sectionals are still very popular. Since putting a blip on the sofa radar in the 1950s, this style has continued to evolve, from its overstuffed version in the 80s to the streamlined look it has today. Not only are sectionals great for offering abundant seating, but they are also a wonderful option for odd corners or other areas in the home that lack space as they can be broken up into sections.  

What’s Trending in 2020 for Sofas

Actually, all of the above and then some. This year, however, look for slight variations (think curvy and organic) to these classics that offer homeowners more opportunity to have a sofa that truly reflects their individual style. 

Convertible sofas are also trending this year. Whether you prefer a simple futon that folds down flat or a full-sized sleeper sofa, you can be sure you’ll have a comfortable sleeping arrangement for your guests.

In regards to color, this year it’s all about deep jewel tones, pinks, and of course neutrals. When it comes to upholstery, velvet continues to be a top contender as are patterns that make a statement.
