The Do’s and Dont’s of Decorating with a Pet

Just because you love your pet(s) doesn’t mean you have to compromise your sense of decorating style in order to accommodate them. Here are some simple do’s and don’ts that will make you and your four-legged friend(s) comfortable and content.

Do: Choose tough fabrics. 

Fabrics such as leather, microfiber, cotton, and cotton blends are all pet-friendly options that are both attractive and durable. Slipcovers are another sensible option. Save any fancy fabrics for the formal rooms your pet is less likely to frequent. Area rugs can be wonderful at masking dirt and protecting hardwood floors but make sure you don’t purchase something high-priced. Jute, sisal or seagrass mats are durable enough to handle pet traffic, yet inexpensive enough to replace when they no longer look good. If your pet shares your bed, cotton sheets and a durable mattress protection pad are wise choices.

Don’t: Display breakables in heavy pet territory. 

If you have precious trinkets or special family heirlooms, it’d be best to move those to a separate room if possible. Being able to close a door or block the entrance with a gate makes it easier to preserve the life of pieces you love.

Do: Pick durable flooring. 

Tile, sealed hardwood, and even synthetic wood flooring are all great choices if you have pets. All are durable, which means they’ll stand up to scratches and moisture–two things your flooring is sure to see with pets in the house.

Don’t: Choose light colors.

If dirt and stains drive you crazy, then light colored fabrics are flooring are not for you. Instead, pick darker colors that conceal those messes better. Another thing to consider is a fabric that doesn’t match your pet. Dark fur will be more visible on light fabrics. Likewise, light fur will stand out on darker textiles. For the best results, go with fur-toned fabric unless you’re able to keep on top of cleaning.

Do: Clean often. 

Not just your home’s interior, but your pet as well. Maintaining both will keep unsightly messes and odors at bay.

Don’t: Let your pet have free reign.

The best way to keep your home from being a hairy mess is to have a designated pet space. It doesn’t matter if it’s a simple corner or an entire room–have a spot where falling fur isn’t such a big deal. Another thing to keep in mind is pet toys. If you can’t keep on top of them, then it might be time to purge. Nestling toys in a basket that can be tucked in a corner or under a table will greatly contribute to your home looking neat and tidy.
