Chevron is an inverted V-shaped pattern with each plank end meeting at the point without interruption. The results are a continuous and seamless zig-zag pattern. While one might think chevron is easily distinguishable, it is often confused with the herringbone pattern, whose zig-zag appears “broken” in that the end of one plank meets the side of the other.

Flooring

As mentioned earlier, chevron is historically rooted in flooring design— and even though it looks great in several other areas of the home, using it underfoot is an easy decorating win. It doesn’t matter whether you create the chevron pattern out of wood or tile, it can make any floor look amazing! When using it in flooring, it’s important to remember that color is key, so pay attention to how much impact you want to make and choose a color that will get the job done.

Layering patterns can be tricky, but there are some tips that will make the process easier: 

• Choose patterns that either fall within the same color scheme or whose hues fall opposite of one another on the color wheel. Keeping colors with the same intensity can also create a beautiful look. If it’s subtle you prefer, lean towards contrasting prints in black, white, gray, or neutral tones to tie the look together. 
• Play with scale, using a mixture of pattern sizes. Adhering to the rule of three (one small, one medium, and one large print) can keep the space looking balanced and visually appealing.
