Using a Statement Piece in Your Home Décor

If you’re looking for a way to really jazz up your home’s interior, a statement piece is a great way to do it. What exactly is a statement piece, you ask? It’s that decorating element that stops you in your tracks, making you take a second, and possibly even a third, look. Whether it’s due to its color, its design, or simply its size, a statement piece makes an impression that won’t easily be forgotten.

But just how do you know what makes the right statement piece? While there aren’t really any hard rules per se, there are some guidelines that are at least worth taking into consideration. By doing so, you’ll have a better chance at choosing the best statement piece for setting the right tone for the style of your entire home— the first time.

1. Let the statement piece be noticeable (very noticeable)

The statement piece should be the star of the show, so make sure that it is. It should be able to convey a message on its own, setting the stage for the rest of your home. If you need other items nearby to help it make sense, then it might be best used in a different way.

2. Pay attention to scale

While your statement piece is the star of the show, it shouldn’t necessarily be the only thing in the room. Not only is it impractical, but it’s also poor design in that having a single piece could make the room appear off balance. Instead, surround it with other pieces that will complement it. When doing so, assess the size of the room and then choose pieces that will fit well.

3. Consider color

Color is incredibly powerful. It speaks to us and influences our moods in many different ways. Because of this, it’s important to keep color in mind when choosing a statement piece. Ask yourself, “what do I want this to say?” Or, “what mood am I trying to create?” If it’s a calm, relaxing vibe, perhaps opt for something in green or blue. If it’s drama or something else you want to invoke, then lean toward a color that will help you achieve that goal.

4. Don’t feel pressured to match

Long gone are the days of furniture and decor that’s matchy-matchy. In fact, intentional mismatching can be a really good thing when done right. Keep that in mind when choosing your statement piece. The ultimate goal is to find a piece that complements the rest of your deco— but only if that’s what you want. If you want to go all-in for maximum effect, by all means, opt for a piece that “clashes” a bit more.

5. Have fun!

Even if you don’t feel that your style is particularly playful or whimsical, it doesn’t mean that your piece isn’t fun. Fun is what you make it. And, in the end, all that matters is that the statement piece brings YOU joy.
