Decorating in Black and White

While colorful palettes are wonderful for interior design, there is much to be said for a color scheme of black and white. You see, a black and white palette, when done right, is anything but boring. The varying shades of each color are quite amazing, leaving you with more options than you may realize.

While whites can be stark and bright, they can also be warm and creamy. Sometimes, certain shades even verge on a cool, icy blue. The color black is no different. Its varying shades span from dark, jet black to soft, blue black, and all the grays in between. All of which, gives you the ability to create a stunning palette for your home. This combination of colors can be just as trendy as it can be elegant, all the while adding a special zing to your room other colors just can’t do.

The great thing about this color combination is that it doesn’t have to be limited to a single room. Black and white is a scheme that can be found in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, and even home offices. Before you jump in and get started, there are some things to know:

(1)  If using patterned fabric, it is important to keep scale in mind. Keep the balance in check by layering small, medium and large patterns, and adding minimal touches of plain black and white fabrics to tie it all together. (2)  You don’t have to decorate the entire room in black and white to still have impact. Even if your space is in a color you love, there are still ways to add pop. A black and white tiled floor, artwork and frames in black and white, lighting fixtures, and furnishings such as entertainment centers, dressers, and coffee tables in black or white, are all great ways to incorporate this fabulous color combo.

(3)  If you do decorate the entire room in black and white, add some fun by incorporating small bursts of color throughout the space. You can do this with things like accent pillows, lamp bases or shades, bowls, vases, or artwork.

(4)  In the kitchen, white cabinetry can be lovely, but black will really make a statement, especially if you have light-colored dishes to display through glass or open fronts.

(5)  Don’t be afraid to put black on the walls. One big, black accent wall amidst surrounding white ones, can really amp up the drama.

Whatever you choose to do, have fun with it. With so many varying shades around there’s no reason you can’t find something that’ll make your home look stunning. Need some black and white inspiration? Check out these great ideas on Pinterest!
