Designing a Vision: Get inspired

Inspiration for decorating can come from anywhere a piece of clothing, a favorite vacation destination, a plate of food, a childhood memory, and much more–so don’t limit your focus. A good place to start is by thinking about what you like in regards to things such as color, pattern, texture, furniture and accents. Once you have an idea about what you’re drawn to, seek them out in places like books, catalogs, blogs, magazines, television shows and decorating websites. Rip sheets of images you love out of magazines, print online pictures, or bookmark web pages so you’ll have them available later. If you see a paint color or fabric swatch you love while you’re out and about, jot down the name so you can follow up on it.

Organize your ideas

A great way to keep yourself on track as you collect ideas is to organize them on a vision inspiration board. Having your clippings, fabric swatches, paint chips, etc, laid out visually, on something like a bulletin board, will make it easier to add to or take away from the design you have in your mind. You could even clip heavier items to a piece of twine, hang them up on hooks or pegs, or lay them out on a tray. The point is to get all of your ideas collected in one place.

Edit until it looks and feels right

Take time to carefully evaluate the inspiration images, adding to, or taking away, as necessary. The complete vision won’t happen overnight, so take your time, even if it takes you months, rather than weeks. Keep in mind that your board doesn’t have to be overflowing with ideas a simple handful of them is all you need if that’s what gets the job done.

Have fun with the process

Decorating is supposed to be enjoyable, not stressful, so take your time to avoid getting overwhelmed. And be sure to make room for your hobbies or passions, so your home stays personal, like it should be.
