Transitional style is a blend of traditional and contemporary design a “just right” space for those who love the best of both. Let’s take a look at what some of the building blocks are that make up this beautiful design style:

Tone-on-Tone Palettes: If you enjoy an abundance of color then this style won’t necessarily suit you. “Transitionalists” thrive on warm neutrals with subtle splashes of color here and there. Cream, taupe, khaki and gray, with the occasional hint of dark brown, are often the foundation of a transitional home. Patterns are appreciated, however, they are often understated.

Neutral Flooring: In a transitional space, flooring can be looked upon as the co-star in the room. It really doesn’t matter what the flooring material is–what matters more is that it’s subtle. Natural woods, stone, tile and neutral carpeting are all common flooring in transitional design.

Textural Touches: While colors aren’t relied upon to punch up the space, texture, is. A transitional interior generally consists of coarsely woven fabrics, natural fibers and a blend of shiny and matte finishes–all of which, bring in layers of visual interest.

Crisp Window Treatments: A transitional space is all about balance, especially when it comes to window treatments. You won’t find anything too elaborate, and you’ll rarely find windows bare. What you will find are elegant, yet simply dressed windows. Think basic panels, bamboo blinds, and neutral Roman shades.

Simple Silhouettes: Transitional furnishings are pretty straightforward in their appearance. Generally, there will be a combination of straight and curved lines. Furniture will be large enough to feel inviting, without being overwhelming to the space.

Minimal Accents: As with furnishings, transitional accents are simple yet nice. Artwork is typically framed and often on the larger size to fit the room and catch the eye. Lighting has strong, clean lines, which complements the other pieces within the space.

Serenity: The transitional design style is all about a calming environment. If something is causing discord, edit the space until it feels completely peaceful. The interior of a transitional home should fit together seamlessly to create a unified space.
