With the holidays approaching you might find yourself with friends or family staying in your home. Whether it’s overnight, or longer, your guest room should be a retreat for visitors. Here are some tips on how to make your guest feel relaxed and welcome in your home during their stay.
Tip #1: Paint the walls a soothing color
Neutral paint such as a soft blues, grays, or whites are great choices when it comes to creating a serene place for guests. Bright colors are energizing, which might keep your visitors awake, rather than lull them to sleep.
Tip #2: Have furniture in the room other than the bed
Having a dresser in the room with a couple of empty drawers can make your guests feel much more at home. Take use of the lower drawers by filling them extra linens and spare towels. A bedside table is also nice to have in the room. Not only is it the perfect place for a lamp and alarm clock, it gives guests a place to set things down. If you’re worried about glasses leaving a ring on the tabletop, make sure you have some coasters laid out. Other pieces of furniture to consider are a vanity, armoire and a comfy chair.
Tip #3: Use nice bedding
While custom bedding is always a great investment, it’s not necessarily something people can, or want, to do for a spare room. If you prefer to purchase something from a department store, try to find something that’s a bit higher quality. If possible, spring for some sheets of a high thread count. To top it off, add some accent pillows to make it even more inviting. For added customization and to save some money, go for it and make the bedding yourself!
Tip #4: Always have window treatments
It doesn’t matter if you hang drapes, use a Roman shade or simply put up a valance with blinds, window treatments are important. Not only do window treatments provide privacy, they really finish off the room.
Tip #5: Hang things on the wall
The guest room isn’t really a place to fill the walls with personal family pictures but it is a place where you can hang things to make the room look nice. Add things like scenic pictures, a mirror, a clock, or a combination of all three.
Tip #6: Throw in a few extras
A basket full of magazines, a small stack of books, scented candles, fragrant soaps and a soft area rug, are all extra perks that will make the room extra comfortable. It doesn’t have to be much. Just a few things can make your guests feel right at home.
