At one time, rural locations, functional porches, and informal living spaces distinguished a home as farmhouse style. Over the years, however, farmhouse style has evolved into something bigger than anyone probably ever expected. Today, farmhouse style is more than just a way to decorate an interior–it has become an attitude and a way of life. There are still, however, some key elements that define it. Let’s take a deeper look at what some of those are.

Elements of Farmhouse Design Style

Here’s a quick breakdown of farmhouse design:

  • Painted wood walls
  • Wood floors
  • Apron front sink
  • Mixed cabinetry
  • Farmhouse table
  • Vintage lighting
  • Galvanized metal
  • Light colors
  • Cozy fabrics
  • Reclaimed pieces

INTERIOR

The interior of a farmhouse-styled home can be instantly recognized for the comfort, natural materials, and vintage items. It’s full of charm and character, putting a slightly modern twist on simpler times. Hallmarks of farmhouse interiors often include painted wood planked walls, mix-matched furnishings, simple details, and a kitchen that is indeed, the heart of the home. Kitchens often feature a blend of open shelves and wood cabinetry.

Flooring is often wood, however, you may sometimes see a black and white checkered pattern or even terracotta tiles underfoot. Lighting is also important with farmhouse style. Fixtures are often vintage and plentiful, which offer style and function.

FURNITURE

Furniture varies in farmhouse style. While you can expect a lot of wood, you can also expect a variety of metals. Vintage or shabby chic furniture, with a rustic flair, is a signature of farmhouse style. A large farmhouse table is a must. Accompanying chairs vary from a similar rustic wood or a contrasting modern metal. When it comes to beds, four poster beds are just as popular as metal ones. In the bath, a footed bathtub is a common sight.

COLORS

Farmhouse colors are soft ones. Painted walls, even wood ones, are typically painted white. Other soft hues are layered in by way of accents. Decorative pillows, area rugs and small, painted pieces of furniture bring life to the foundation of pale, neutral shades.

TEXTURES & PATTERNS

Farmhouse textiles aren’t fussy. Fabrics are relaxed, comfortable, and inviting. Textures like cotton, burlap, leather, and patterns such as stripes, florals, and checks give an eclectic feel.  Area rugs are often used to soften wood floors and add visual interest.
