Ultra Violet: Reviewing Pantone’s Cosmic Pick for the 2018 Color of the Year

Provocative. Thoughtful. Visionary. These are just a few adjectives used to describe Ultra Violet, Pantone’s fresh new pick for the 2018 Color of the Year. Unexpected and refreshing, this year’s hue is certainly one that will get noticed. While last year’s Greenery left us seeking contentment with the more important things in life, Ultra Violet has us looking toward the future.

Like all previous Pantone Color of the Year picks, the current mood of our world is often a big driving force behind the selection process. Here’s what Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute has to say about it:

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

The color purple has always been sort of an enigma. Historically, it has been associated with royalty, luxury, and spirituality. Purple has also been associated with creativity–and Pantone has taken notice, giving nod [in their press release] to musical icons such as Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix, who brought purple to the forefront of western pop culture.

Whether you love it or hate it, purple will be standing tall and proud this year, setting the stage for a variety of palettes to play with.

So what does this mean for interiors? Let’s take a look

Ultra Violet in Home Decor

Ultra Violet is certainly a color that can transform the interior of a home into one of creativity and self-expression. It can be paired with subdued colors just as easily as it can be paired with lively ones, making it not only fun but versatile.

Ultra Violet can be used to bring attention to a space in a variety of ways. Like this, for example:
